Neuro-Developmental Therapy

What is Neurodevelopmental Therapy or NDT?
The NDT approach is used for management of individuals with Central Nervous System pathophysiology for example, Cerebral Palsy and Stroke. The individual’s impairment are identified and addressed in relation to functional abilities and limitations. NDT is a hands on problem solving approach. Intervention involves direct handling and guidance to optimise function.

What does the therapist Do?
Movements brought about with the therapist’s guided touch are called facilitations. Facilitations encourage correct movement patterns and are always given as the child performs any participative or functional activity. The therapist also prevents or inhibits (stop) movements with abnormal patterns.

At HOPE, the NDT certified therapist analysis the child as a whole, and at the same time look at a task and dissect it to find the critical parts. The therapist understands the child’s/ Adult’s functional limitations and difficulty they face in their posture and movement and understands what impairment contribute to their limitations. The final goal is to then work on those impairments to improve the whole movement pattern of the child and thus helps the child reach their maximum potential functional ability.
